The Foreign Ministry wishes to express its appreciation to the Senate and Chamber of Deputies for their unanimous approval of the draft decree that modifies, adds and eliminates various articles of the Mexican Foreign Service Law.

The new legislation fulfills the pledge made by President Enrique Peña Nieto at the last annual meeting of ambassadors and consuls to strengthen Mexican diplomacy and the professional development and retirement conditions of career diplomats.

The initiative includes the various proposals presented by the legislative and executive branches and Foreign Service members, who will now be better able to effectively carry out Mexico's foreign policy and defend and enforce our country's interests abroad.

The Mexican Foreign Service, founded in 1822, is a career corps of government officials specifically responsible for representing Mexico abroad and executing its foreign policy with loyalty, respect for democratic principles and political neutrality.
