The Foreign Ministry and the National Council to Prevent Discrimination (CONAPRED) signed a collaboration agreement to promote, protect and ensure people's right to equality and non-discrimination by training and raising the awareness of public officials; institutional improvement; and establishing protocols and other tools to eliminate discriminatory practices in the day-to-day work of both institutions.

At the signing ceremony, the Foreign Ministry's Undersecretary for North America, Carlos Sada, stressed the agreement's importance in helping the consulates protect the rights of Mexicans abroad, ensuring their right to equality and non-discrimination.

He thanked CONAPRED for joining the Foreign Ministry in the fight against discrimination, especially regarding the consular services provided abroad by Mexico, including the need to address discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression.

CONAPRED President Alexandra Haas Paciuc thanked the Foreign Ministry for its work on the issue of sexual diversity based on the president’s 2016 instructions. She said that CONAPRED would train and raise the awareness of Foreign Ministry personnel to prevent discrimination.

Lastly, the Foreign Ministry's Chief Administrative Officer, María Fernanda Casanueva De Diego, said that the ministry is committed to carrying out these steps and believes in the need for change on behalf of all those who are the victims of discrimination.

As part of the collaboration agreement, CONAPRED and the Foreign Ministry will draw up a consular protection protocol for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex people (LGBTI).
