The governments of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay strongly condemn the violence that has been unleashed in Venezuela and we mourn the loss of more lives.

We join the United Nations Secretary-General in the statement he made today calling for “concrete gestures from all parties to reduce polarization and create the necessary conditions to address the country’s challenges for the benefit of the Venezuelan people.”

We reiterate that the Venezuelan authorities must urgently adopt measures to ensure fundamental rights and preserve social peace.

It is imperative that Venezuela return to the path of democratic institutionality and that its government set the dates for elections, that it release the political prisoners and guarantee the separation of the Constitutional powers.
