On behalf of the Mexican government, the Foreign Ministry reports that President Enrique Peña Nieto will make an official visit to Paraguay on January 18, as the Senate has been informed.

The visit is to reciprocate for President Horacio Cartes' visit to Mexico in August 2016, deepen the ties of friendship, and strengthen cooperation and political and economic collaboration between the two countries.

While in Asunción, President Enrique Peña Nieto will meet with President Horacio Cartes Jara to discuss the main bilateral, regional and multilateral issues. They will also hold a meeting with their respective committees to assess the current state of the relationship and will witness the signing of new agreements to strengthen the bilateral legal framework. The President will also receive the keys to the city.

President Peña Nieto's visit to Paraguay reaffirms Mexico's deep Latin American roots and its commitment to maintain an open and fluid dialogue with all the countries of the region, with which we share strong historical ties of friendship and cooperation.

In 2016, bilateral trade totaled $231 million USD, an increase of 2.9% compared to 2015.

The official delegation accompanying President Peña Nieto will include Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray Caso; Mexico's ambassador in Paraguay, Fernando Ortega Bernés; CONACYT Director Enrique Cabrero Mendoza; Presidential Chief of Staff, General Roberto Miranda Moreno; the President's Social Communication Coordinator, Eduardo Sánchez Hernández; Senior Adviser to the President, Carlos Pérez-Verdía Canales; the Undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean, Amb. Luis Alfonso de Alba Góngora; and the Interior Ministry's National Coordinator of Civil Protection, Luis Felipe Puente Espinosa.
