The Foreign Ministry does not recognize the legitimacy of the electoral process in Venezuela that concluded on May 20 because it did not comply with international standards for a democratic, free, fair and transparent process.

Therefore, and in accordance with the measures announced in the May 21 Lima Group Statement on the situation in Venezuela, the Mexican government has decided to take the following actions:

  1. Recall Mexico's ambassador in Venezuela, Eréndira Paz Campos, for consultations.
  2. Summon the Venezuelan ambassador to convey Mexico's position.
  3. Issue an alert to the Mexican financial and banking sector regarding the risk they could incur if they carry out operations with the Venezuelan government that are not approved by the National Assembly, including payment agreements and reciprocal loans for foreign trade operations (including military and security goods).
  4. Minimize cultural activities and bilateral cooperation, including military cooperation.
  5. Suspend high-level visits to Venezuela until further notice.

Mexico will remain alert to developments in Venezuela and will continue to seek to contribute both bilaterally and multilaterally to restoring democratic institutions, respect for human rights and the full exercise of the rule of law in Venezuela.
