While in Mexico, Japan's State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Masahisa Sato, met with the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Carlos de Icaza.

Both parties highlighted the excellent state of the bilateral relationship, which has been driven by President Enrique Peña Nieto and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

They also stressed the importance of continuing the high-level political dialogue in order to follow up on the agreements reached during Foreign Secretary Videgaray's visit to Japan in August 2017 and the presidents’ meeting at the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, which took place in Da Nang, Viet Nam last November.

They also reaffirmed the desire of both countries to strengthen the Strategic Partnership, their economic exchanges, and educational, technical and cultural cooperation.

On behalf of the Mexican government, Undersecretary de Icaza again thanked Minister Sato for the many gestures of solidarity and the technical support offered by Japan after the earthquakes that shook Mexico in September 2017.

This year marks the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Japan, which, together with the 120th anniversary of the Japanese migration to Mexico in 2017, represent a watershed in the friendly relations that unite both societies.

Undersecretary de Icaza and Minister Sato agreed on the importance of following up on this year's commemorative activities and pledged to continue working to always improve the mutual understanding.
