The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs of France, Maurice Gourdault-Montagne, is in Mexico from March 15-16 for political consultations and the third meeting of the Mexico-France Follow-up Group.

He met today with Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray, conveying to him the greetings of Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and reaffirming France's interest in continuing to strengthen the strategic partnership. The Foreign Secretary reiterated President Enrique Peña Nieto's invitation to President Emmanuel Macron to visit Mexico in the near future.

Secretary-General Gourdault-Montagne and the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Carlos de Icaza, discussed the success of the commitments and actions agreed to as part of the 2017 road map signed by both countries and agreed that the renewed Franco-Mexican Strategic Council will contribute innovative proposals to enrich the countries' economic, cultural, academic, scientific and technological ties.

They also exchanged views on the latest events in their countries, Europe, Asia and Latin America and talked about ways to collaborate during Argentina's presidency of the G20.

Mexico and France established a Strategic Partnership in 2014 that elevated the level of the bilateral relationship. In 2016, France was Mexico's 4th-ranked trading partner in the EU and ranked 14th worldwide. France is the 9th-ranked investor in Mexico and ranks 6th among the EU countries.  There are 1,853 companies in Mexico with French capital.
