March 20 is International Francophonie Day and the diplomatic representations of the members, associates and observers of the International Organization of La Francophonie (IOF) gathered in the Foreign Ministry to inaugurate Francophone Week 2018 in Mexico.

The International Organization of La Francophonie was created in 1970 and has 84 member states and governments (54 members, 26 observers and 4 associates). Its main missions are to: 1) promote the French language and cultural and linguistic diversity; 2) promote peace, democracy and human rights; 3) support education, training, higher education and research; and 4) promote cooperation in sustainable development.

Since Mexico joined the IOF as an observer in 2014, it has confirmed that its principles align with those of the organization on behalf of peace, democracy, the rule of law, human rights and multilateralism to further the major issues of the global agenda.

Mexico's participation in the IOF--a forum for over 900 million people in an area covering Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, America and the Caribbean--helps strengthen its international role.

Several events showcasing the IOF's richness and diversity have been organized by member diplomatic representations, including film cycles, conferences, exhibits, literary events and more. For the complete program, go to:
