- Foreign Secretary de la Fuente led an event marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25N)
- He said that under the leadership of Mexico's first woman president, Claudia Sheinbaum, the Mexican government is deeply committed to women's cause and to taking action to combat injustice and inequity
Violence against women is simply inadmissible, Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente said in his remarks on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Internationally, according to the latest report from the UN Secretary-General, at least 700 million women and girls have been victims of physical or sexual violence. "This is the magnitude of the problem; this is the magnitude of the challenge; and this is the magnitude of the response we must provide to combat this unacceptable form of violence," he said at the Foreign Ministry.
Foreign Secretary de la Fuente recalled the women who have been victims of violence, making it clear that their legacy will not be in vain. He acknowledged the historical debt the Mexican government owes to these women, a debt that must be paid.
He noted that the day holds special significance this year, as Mexico is now led by a woman, Claudia Sheinbaum, who is deeply committed to women's causes and has been clear not only in her words but in her deeds, which strengthen Mexico’s ability to combat these injustices and inequities.
He announced that the Foreign Ministry is working with the new Women’s Ministry to rigorously observe all legal and ethical measuresaimed at preventing violence against women and eliminating impunity.
As a priority, he said that the ministry will focus on addressing masculinity issues and developing new actions to help prevent all types of violence.
"We need better information and communication, spreading messages that promote prevention from childhood, especially be engaging men in understanding masculinities and how they can actively prevent violence against women,” he stated precisely.
In 1999, the UN General Assembly officially proclaimed November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
