The Secretaries of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, and Economy, Graciela Márquez Colín, appeared before the Permanent Commission of the Congress today to explain the diplomatic strategy with the United States, at the instruction of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. In an unprecedented act of transparency and accountability, the foreign secretary welcomed the remarks and criticism of some legislators regarding the ongoing negotiations with the U.S. government.

The Foreign Ministry had already sent to the Senate a detailed account of the Mexican delegation's activities in Washington, D.C. last week, as well as all of the documents and agreements that resulted from the bilateral negotiations.

The foreign secretary invited the legislators to play an active role in Mexico's negotiations with the United States, and to form a committee that would join the Mexican delegation at the next meeting in Washington, D.C., saying that parliamentary diplomacy could play an important role in strengthening Mexico's position.

The foreign secretary called on UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the international community to join Mexico in ensuring that regional migration was orderly, safe and regular, according to the Global Compact for Migration. He said that, despite its contrasting views, the U.S. government had reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Comprehensive Development Plan with the countries of northern Central America, which would be launched in the next few days.

The secretary also explained the strategy for regulating the southern border, which will result in less migration and better protect migrants' human rights, which the Mexican government will defend in line with its laws and principles.
