On behalf of Mexico, Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray signed the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean, known as the Escazú Agreement.

The high-level event, held during the 73rd UN General Assembly, was attended by heads of state, heads of government and foreign ministers from Latin America and the Caribbean, and by ECLAC Executive Secretary Alicia Bárcena.

The agreement, adopted on March 4, 2018 in Escazú, Costa Rica, by 24 of the region's countries, including Mexico, aims to guarantee the full and effective implementation in Latin America and the Caribbean of the rights of access to environmental information, public participation in the environmental decision-making process and access to justice in environmental matters.

The agreement will enter into force 90 days after the date of deposit of the eleventh instrument of ratification, acceptance, approval or accession. It provides for the creation and strengthening of capacities and cooperation, contributing to the protection of the right of every person of present and future generations to live in a healthy environment and to sustainable development.
