President Peña Nieto made clear the foreign policy of the Mexican government for the next two years. According to the goals established at the beginning of the administration, Mexico will continue to strengthen its role as an actor with global responsibility.

With regard to the relationship with the United States and its new administration, the following are the principles and objectives with which Mexico will conduct its negotiations:

  • National sovereignty (dignity, firmness and strength)
  • Respect for the rule of law
  • A constructive and purposeful vision
  • Integration of North America
  • Comprehensive negotiations

Mexico’s priority goals in its negotiations with the United States:

  1. The United States must make a commitment to ensure humane treatment and respect for the rights of Mexican migrants.
  2. The United States must repatriate undocumented migrants in an orderly and coordinated fashion, using protocols that have been developed jointly.
  3. Hemispheric development must be a shared responsibility
  4. To ensure the free flow of remittances from our fellow countrymen
  5. The U.S. government must work with Mexico with co-responsibility
  6. To preserve free trade between Mexico, Canada and the U.S.
  7. To include new sectors such as telecommunications and e-commerce
  8. Any negotiations with the U.S. must include better salaries
  9. To protect and attract new and better investments
  10. We will work for a border that unites us, not one that divides us.
