Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard and Adam S. Boehler, Chief Executive Office of the U.S. International Development FInance Corporation (DFC)--successor agency of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC)—today announced the progress that has been made in development cooperation. To date, OPIC has disbursed $187 million for microfinancing to MSMEs and has signed two letters of intent to finance two infrastructure projects totaling $720 million in southern Mexico.
During his visit, a letter of intent will be signed to finance a major project in Chiapas, representing an investment of 632 million dollars. Due diligence is advanced in another seven projects: four for infrastructure improvements in the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Tabasco and Quintana Roo, and three in the agricultural and logistics services sector in Veracruz, Chiapas, Morelos and Yucatán.
Lastly, a meeting was held with the foreign and finance ministers of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras to explain the successful cooperation model established between the Foreign Ministry and OPIC. The US agency and the Central American countries agreed to continue working with the private sector to boost the region's development. This visit follows up on the declaration that was signed by Mexico and the United States in December and reaffirmed in June, and is a further step forward in the effort to provide development cooperation to southern Mexico and Central America to improve living conditions there.
