During today’s morning press conference led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in the state of Oaxaca, Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard reported on the arrival in Mexico of a shipment of 870,000 AstraZeneca vaccines from India. "With the arrival of these doses, Mexico is in a position to expand and accelerate its vaccination plan thanks to the support of friendly countries and to the presence and respect the Government of Mexico has gained around the world," he said.

The Foreign Secretary explained that the vaccines were produced by the Serum Institute of India and are part of a contract arranged through the Biological and Reagent Laboratories of Mexico (Birmex) for two million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.  With this shipment, Mexico now exceeds the number of doses received since December 23, 2020.

The Foreign Secretary said that this shipment is key for Mexico because now the National Vaccination Plan will be accelerated. He conveyed his sincere thanks to the Government of India through the Ambassador of India in Mexico, Manpreet Vohra, who also participated in the morning press conference, for its support and willingness to finalize the agreement.

For his part, the ambassador said that for his country it is important "to share with and help our friends," so they are very happy and confident that the vaccines "will be well used to stop the COVID-19 pandemic" in terms of how the vaccines are going to be distributed and what Mexico's priorities are, especially regarding health workers.

The Foreign Secretary announced that on Tuesday, February 16, the supply of Pfizer vaccines to Mexico will resume after a three-week pause in its shipments from Belgium to destinations around the world. Mexico will receive a shipment of 494,000 doses.  Shipments will increase in number every week and the public will be informed about the shipments confirmed between the Government of Mexico and the various pharmaceutical companies and/or governments, in addition to the number of doses and the type of vaccine.

The Secretary reiterated the government's commitment to guarantee timely access to COVID-19 vaccines, and to acquire as many doses as possible as soon as possible, as instructed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
