On behalf of the Mexican government, the Foreign Ministry and the Attorney General's Office (PGR) report that Javier Duarte de Ochoa was extradited to Mexico today where will face several charges for crimes allegedly committed when he served as governor of Veracruz.

Mr. Duarte's extradition was accomplished with full respect for his human rights and for due process, in accordance with Guatemalan domestic law and with the bilateral extradition treaty in force.

The Mexican government thanks the Guatemalan authorities for their help in immediately arresting Mr. Duarte on April 15 and for proceeding with the extradition process as requested by Mexico under the bilateral extradition treaty signed in 1997, which has led to today's handover of this fugitive from Mexican justice.

With actions such as these, the Mexican government demonstrates its commitment to obtaining results in its fight against impunity in order to benefit our society with objectivity and impartiality in its efforts to strengthen our rule of law.
