The Mexican and Chinese governments, represented by the Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, Carlos de Icaza, and the Assistant Foreign Minister for Latin America and the Caribbean, Qin Gang, respectively, held their 16th meeting for bilateral political consultations and the fifth meeting of the strategic dialogue in Beijing on May 2.

At the meetings, the officials agreed to intensify the bilateral joint actions taken as part of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership launched by Presidents Enrique Peña Nieto and Xi Jinping in June 2013.

Undersecretary de Icaza; Mexico’s ambassador to China, José Luis Bernal; and Assistant Foreign Minister Gang welcomed the increase in exchanges and investments between Mexico and China, as well as the increased air connectivity between the two countries, which will help strengthen bilateral ties in tourism and business.

Ambassador de Icaza also met with the Vice Minister for Economic and Multilateral Affairs in the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Li Baodong, to discuss the international economic situation, the state of the global economy and cooperation within the G20.

While in Beijing, Undersecretary de Icaza met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to review the progress that has been made in the bilateral relationship and the growing number of areas of agreement on global issues.

The People’s Republic of China is Mexico’s second most important trading partner in the world, with bilateral trade of almost USD 75 billion in 2016. The main channels of consultation and cooperation are the political consultations, the strategic dialogue, the binational commission and its working groups, and frequent presidential meetings.
