Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente met today with Esteban Moctezuma, Mexico's Ambassador to the United States; Héctor Vasconcelos, Mexico's Representative to the UN; and six consuls from the northeastern U.S. The meeting focused on defining consular priorities and strategies to build trust between the Mexican community and the Mexican government to address the current and emerging challenges.

Speaking on behalf of President Claudia Sheinbaum, the Foreign Secretary said that the Mexicans in the U.S. are not alone. The Mexican government, represented by its consular network, stands ready to assist, accompany, protect, and safeguard the rights of Mexicans, using every available legal avenue for their defense.

"At this moment, Mexico has no other foreign policy priority than our citizens,” said Secretary de la Fuente. He reiterated the instruction to the consular team to ensure that they respond rapidly and effectively to protect and defend Mexicans.

As part of President Sheinbaum’s strategy, Secretary de la Fuente asked the consuls to make more visits to the immigration holding facilities in their respective jurisdictions and to be in ongoing contact with the immigration authorities to ensure respect for human rights.

He emphasized the importance of building and strengthening community partnerships. Civil and social organizations play a key role in supporting and defending Mexicans in the U.S.

"We have to seek them out; we have to go out and see them. This is not the time to be in the office; this is the moment for community work, for forging these partnerships, having them ready, and convincing them or our need to work together," he said.

At the meeting in New York, the Foreign Secretary was accompanied by Mexican Ambassador to the U.S., Esteban Moctezuma Barragán; Héctor Vasconcelos, Permanent Representative to the UN; Rafael Laveaga Rendón, head of the consular section at the embassy in the U.S.; and consuls Claudia Velasco Osorio in Raleigh, Mariana Díaz Nagore in New Brunswick, Alberto Fierro Garza in Boston, Carlos Obrador Garrido in Philadelphia, and Joaquín Gerardo Pastrana Uranga, the chargé d'affaires in New York.
