Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray met today with members of the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) of Venezuela during their visit to Mexico to raise awareness about key aspects of the situation in Venezuela.

The Foreign Secretary met with National Assembly Deputy Julio Borges; Carlos Vecchio, National Political Coordinator of the Voluntad Popular Party; and Tomás Guanipa, Secretary General of the Primero Justicia Party.

During the meeting, the Venezuelans discussed the serious situation in their country, the opposition's rejection of the elections convened for May 20, and the goals and vision of the newly created Frente Amplio por Venezuela, a new political platform formed to restore constitutional order and democracy to Venezuela.

Foreign Secretary Videgaray voiced his solidarity with the Venezuelan people and reiterated that Mexico believes strongly in dialogue and consultation so that it is the Venezuelans themselves who find a peaceful and democratic solution. He also said that Mexico will continue to support the region's diplomatic efforts to help restore Venezuela's democratic institutions and to address the serious humanitarian situation in the country.

The Foreign Secretary highlighted the declaration adopted by the Lima Group on February 13 and the OAS Permanent Council resolution dated February 23 which, among other things, urge the Venezuelan government to reconsider calling for presidential elections and to present a new electoral calendar that makes it possible to carry out elections with all the necessary guarantees for a free, fair, transparent, legitimate and credible process that includes the participation of all Venezuelan political parties and actors.

Foreign Secretary Videgaray was accompanied by the Undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean, Luis Alfonso de Alba.
