• Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard toured the San Jerónimo – Santa Teresa border crossing, which is being expanded and modernized to boost cross-border trade between Mexico and the United States

Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard headed a delegation of government officials that toured the border crossing between San Jerónimo, Chihuahua and Santa Teresa, New Mexico. They were given an explanation of the expansion and modernization of the border facilities, one of the main binational projects.

Currently, about 50 billion dollars of goods cross the border at Ciudad Juárez, making it the second-largest crossing point for exports, nationally.  It has 35 industrial parks and is ranked second in Mexico for most manufacturing companies. This investment in new border infrastructure aims to create a new hub that attracts the most sophisticated manufacturing in the world.

Foreign Secretary Ebrard said that, on the instructions of President López Obrador, this was a high priority project for the Mexican government and that it would be completed by 2024. He said that the city's strategic location, the interconnected communications and the readiness of the Mexican and U.S. governments to undertake the project would be important factors for relocating supply chains and attracting new jobs and investment to the region.

He added that the modernization must be done well and on time and that, with the support of the local, state and federal governments, it would be equipped with all necessary services to ensure that the various investments planned in the area are made.

Secretary Ebrard was accompanied by the Chief Officer for North America, Roberto Velasco; the Director General of Engineers from the Defense Ministry, General Salvador Cervantes; the New Mexico Secretary for Economic Development, Alicia Keyes; the Chihuahua Secretary for Innovation and Economic Development, María Angélica Granados; and Ciudad Juárez Mayor Cruz Pérez Cuéllar.

While in the city, the secretary also visited the Foxconn company, the largest electronics manufacturing company in the world.  It specializes in the manufacturing, assembly, packaging and shipping of electronic devices and is key for strengthening the supply chain for semiconductors and electric vehicles. Foreign Secretary Ebrard met with company directors, who discussed the company's projects and investments  and gave him a tour so that he could meet the staff and see the plant in operation.

Secretary Ebrard also met with executives from the Maquiladora and Export Manufacturing Industry (Index) to discuss the investments, challenges and concerns of Ciudad Juárez business executives. Lastly, he visited the Benito Juárez Olympic Stadium, where he greeted and spoke with the Ciudad Juárez Braves soccer team.
