- In Sonora, Foreign Secretary Ebrard and Governor Alfonso Durazo, accompanied by Conapesca head Octavio Almada, inaugurate a meeting of the FAO Sub-Committee on Aquaculture.
Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard announced that the government would expand sustainable aquaculture to ensure food security in Mexico.
The Foreign Secretary, together with Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo, today inaugurated a meeting of the Sub-Committee on Aquaculture of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization in Hermosillo with representatives of 69 countries.
"Our work plan is to increase the contribution of aquaculture to Mexico's food security and to help reduce hunger throughout the American continent," Ebrard explained.
The Foreign Secretary said that Sonora is an aquaculture powerhouse that, between fishing and aquaculture, produces more than a third of all that Mexico produces. The state has 157 shrimp producers, 27 for shellfish, and 12 for various kinds of fish.
"Sonora has developed the foundation, so if we scale up production throughout the country, we can guarantee our food security, that's what this meeting is about," he explained.
Also participating in the event were FAO Aquaculture Subcommittee Secretary Matthias Halwart and Conapesca head Octavio Almada.
