This is the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister in three decades.

President Peña Nieto and Prime Minister Modi will discuss ways to strengthen the bilateral relationship and cooperation and to take advantage of trade and investment opportunities.

Mexico and India established diplomatic relations on August 1, 1950, Mexico being the first Latin American country to do so. The two countries have a long tradition of cooperation in international forums and have had a privileged partnership since 2007, which has strengthened the bilateral relationship through its various channels of dialogue. The two countries have worked closely on many issues such as cooperation and development, the North-South dialogue, the environment, human rights and disarmament.
