California is the most populous state in the United States as well as the third largest. California's total population is 38.8 million, of which 11.4 million (29.4%) have a Mexican background and 4.3 million (11%) are first-generation Mexicans.

Mexico has 10 consulates in California to serve the Mexican population living or visiting the state: in Fresno, Los Angeles, Oxnard, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Francisco, San Jose and Santa Ana, and two on the border—Calexico and San Diego.

California is Mexico’s second-ranked trading partner in the United States after Texas, while Mexico is California’s second-ranked trading partner, as well.

Mexican immigrants are key to California’s growth and economic expansion, and the Foreign Secretary will meet with some of the leaders of the Mexican community. She will also meet with a group of women leaders, visit a Consulate on Wheels and a mobile health window, and meet with a group of DREAMers and IME scholarship students.
