Mexico achive to reduce an 80 percent the recovery period of patients who have been put into neurosurgery interventions, treat brain tumors, vascular malformations, hydrocephalus, craniocerebral trauma and spinal tumors.

In Mexico´s Ministry of Health hospitals is applied the neuronavigation system, which has reduced or even avoided surgery sequels, because this technique acts like a GPS that respects blood vessels, brain level eloquence zones and veins.

In the last two years, the Medical Centre “Bachelor Adolfo Lopez Mateos”, located on the State of Mexico has performed over more than 250 successfully neurosurgeries, and has achieved increasing the number of patients. This is because the system allow to do from 8 to 12 surgeries at a month, even two in the same day.

The doctor Carlos Tevera Ovando, surgery deputy director of that hospital, explained that the neuronavigation is a high specialty tool that allow to locate brain tumors and evaluate cephalic structures, even before opening the skin.

With this method the time of surgery interventions is reduced and the life quality of the patients gets better, avoiding that up to the 90 per cent of them reach the intensive care service.

He reminded that previously, a patient with a brain tumor neurosurgery stayed at the hospital from 15 to 20 days. Now, the patients can leave the hospital two or three days after de surgery.

Mexico´s State hospital network count with four neuronavigators, located in the Las Americas Hospital, in the Zumpango´s High Specialized Hospital and in the Children´s Hospital from the State of Mexico´s Maternal and Child Institute.

This has allowed that people who has the financial framework to pay the attention called “Seguro Popular” (People´s Health Insurance), can be attended at a very low cost.
