The Ministry of Health through the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS), announced the first release of 38 products with cannabis and its derivatives, which do not have THC nor cause psychoactive effects, and that will be available in the Mexican market, in the next five weeks.

At the same time an awareness campaign will be launched in social networks about the proper use of cannabis products and health effects, especially in children, where there will be present scientific and medical details related to this type of plants.

Also on the official website of the dependency a link will be available where the products authorized by COFEPRIS will be presented.

At a press conference held at the Miguel E. Bustamante Auditorium of the Ministry of Health, the Federal Commissioner, Julio Sánchez and Tépoz, announced that in this first round of authorizations, there are 21 food supplements, 9 cosmetics, 6 foods and 2 raw materials.

The federal official pointed out that some nutritional supplements will contribute to the treatment of patients diagnosed with epilepsy, arthritis, stress and anxiety. In addition, they will serve as relaxants, analgesics and for the treatment of sleep deprivation. Other products are balsams and creams that can be used for topical use for specific conditions.

Sánchez and Tépoz described this fact as historic, since for more than 90 years its use in the country was prohibited. Now with the new modifications to the General Health Law, they can be used for scientific, medical and industrial use.

He indicated that these authorized products contain in proportion less than 1 percent of the content of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and were prepared by seven companies -four of them with Mexican, two American and one Spanish- that comply 100 percent with the Guidelines on Sanitary Control of Cannabis and its derivatives.

The federal official made it clear that these products have the quality, safety and efficacy standards, which can be acquired at specific points of sale or through the Internet, without the need of a prescription. To avoid replicas, they will have a bar code and their labeling will inform the consumer details of their use.

Sánchez and Tépoz explained that once the companies comply with the requirements, the authorization is delivered in 10 working days after the start of the process.

He said that since the publication of the Guidelines on sanitary control of cannabis and its derivatives, on October 30, COFEPRIS has received a total of 51 requests for health assessment. Of the total number of applications received, 38 comply 100% with the provisions of the Guidelines in proportions lower than 1% THC.

The National Commissioner presented the characteristics of each one of the products, among which are the american organic oils, which can be used for the treatment of epilepsy, relaxation and as analgesics, among others.
