The research carried out in the Translational Research Unit of the National Autonomous University of Mexico within the National Institute of Cardiology (INCAR by its initials in Spanish) of this country, will influence in the short term in the diagnosis and treatment of emerging health problems, related to cardiac alterations such as obesity and arterial hypertension, said the head of the Research Department of this institute, Dr. Jesus Vargas Barron.

With this unit it is possible to complement advanced basic research techniques with non-invasive diagnostic equipment, to study patients with congenital or acquired heart diseases, he reported.

Vargas Barron said that although there are very similar units in other national health institutes, research is limited to protocols, and not always is used for the diagnosis and treatment of people with heart conditions.

Currently, there are more than 10 translational projects related to problems such as hypertension, acute myocardial infarction in pre and post-menopausal women, lipid alteration and renal failure, he stressed.

This unit is equipped with five basic science laboratories and a sixth non-invasive diagnostic equipped with electrocardiography, 24-hour monitoring of cardiac signs and sleep studies.

He pointed out that cardiovascular diseases are a public health problem due to their high morbidity and mortality and this unit will make possible to expand knowledge of these alterations in order to propose diagnostic measures or treatments that help to improve cardiovascular health.

In the research unit 10 researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico collaborate, two per laboratory, who are commissioned and retain their positions in the UNAM, in addition to belong to the National System of Researchers (SNI), and from INCAR collaborate five specialists, four of them members of the SNI. Also, this unit has the collaboration of 30 graduate students, he explained.

Units of this type facilitate interaction between higher education institutions and medical institutions, such as INCAR, with respect and ethics. In addition, researchers can access patients and generate new knowledge with a real approach.

With this unit, Mexico is positioned at the level of first world countries in terms of research, due to the vanguard multidisciplinary interaction.
