At a press conference, the INCMNSZ nutritionist, Astrid Ruiz Margain, explained that these diets increase the risk of presenting metabolic disorders, severe malnutrition and liver problems, by excluding vitamins, minerals, proteins and fats.

Therefore, she said, no diet should be self-prescribed, since there is no recipe that can be effective for the entire population. When a patient intends to lose weight, they should be guided and monitored by nutrition specialists who use comprehensive methods and personalized diets.

In her speech, INCMNS nutritionist, teacher Sophia E. Martinez, reported that another diet that is fashionable among the Mexican population is low or free gluten, however, is only prescribed to patients suffering from celiac disease. In Mexico, she explained, less than 1 percent of the population suffers from it, which reduces the need for its use.

She said that often the diagnosis of celiac disease is confused with excess bacteria in the intestine, lactose intolerance or irritable bowel, because there are people who consume some wheat product are inflamed and have gastrointestinal symptoms, however, not there is evidence that said diet improves symptoms.

In his participation, the researcher in medical sciences "A" of INCMNSZ, Enrique Coss, announced that between 20 and 40 percent of Mexican people have gastrointestinal problems when consuming dairy products because in the small intestine the sugar is not digested.

The symptomatology of lactose intolerance ranges from inflammation and gas to severe diarrhea, however, for the human being, milk is an essential product for development only during the first two years of life and can later be eliminated from the diet.

There, the specialists recommended going to the doctor in the presence of any symptomatology caused by the food they eat and avoiding diets without the supervision of nutritionists.

In the framework of the Day of the Nutritionist commemorated on January 27, the specialists highlighted that the work of nutrition professionals in the research and development of community programs is essential to propose, test and recommend new nutritional treatments, as well as to combat public health problems such as diabetes and obesity.
