Before the plenary of the 70th World Health Assembly, the Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion of Mexico´s Ministry of Health, Pablo Kuri Morales, warned the need to adopt healthy lifestyles and environments with the aim of guaranteeing a healthy life and achieve the well-being of the population of the world.

He considered that the 2030 agenda for sustainable development is an important stimulus that will contribute to improving the world's health systems, according to the conditions in each nation, through health promotion and disease prevention.

During the 70th World Health Assembly held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 22 to 31 May, WHO Member States elected Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the new Director General of WHO.

During the five-day work of the Assembly, progress is being assessed on priority issues for all participating countries, such as sustainable development, prevention and control of chronic non-communicable diseases, obesity and diabetes, as well as diseases affecting vulnerable populations such as HIV-AIDS, tuberculosis, measles and poliomyelitis.

On this occasion, the central theme is Building better health systems in the era of sustainable development, where the 194 member states participate. The delegation of Mexico is made up of experts in disease prevention, health promotion, epidemiology, regulation and protection against health risks.

With this, the nation reaffirms its commitment to make health a mechanism to eradicate poverty and inequality for the benefit of the vulnerable population.

Mexican officials participate in discussions to improve public policies and impact on programs targeting maternal, child and reproductive health, breastfeeding and vaccination.

In addition, together with the MIKTA space countries, made up of Australia, South Korea, Indonesia, Mexico and Turkey, capacity building is promoted to make national health systems better prepared to deal with health emergencies that are presented.

On the other hand, topics are discussed on the preparation, monitoring and response, global and regional to health emergencies. Mexico supports international efforts to raise awareness of antimicrobial resistance, strengthen the public health approach to the world drug problem and the care of migrants.
