Maintaining healthy habits such as physical activity and quitting smoking are part of the treatment to deal with erectile dysfunction, inability to initiate or sustain an erection during a sexual relationship, which can be classified as organic and psychogenic.

According to the head of the urology service of the General Hospital of Mexico "Dr. Eduardo Liceaga, doctor Eduardo Alonso Serrano Brambila said that organic erectile dysfunction is characterized by having a physical origin, usually in adult males with more comorbidities. While psychogenic has a mental process, common among young people.

He noted that most young patients are involved in work, financial, family and emotional problems, which generates anxiety. Therefore, he said, medications are prescribed to improve their self-esteem and can normally develop an erection during intercourse.

He explained that in the case of organic erectile dysfunction, the damage suffered by the blood vessels and nerves that govern erection in patients with diabetes, prevents blood from reaching the penis abruptly to achieve firmness.

Serrano Brambila explained that patients with high cholesterol or triglycerides not only have blocked the arteries of the corpora cavernosa of the penis, but of its entire anatomy.

"The 30 percent of patients who come for erectile dysfunction has blocked the coronary arteries - heart arteries - so they are sent to the cardiology service to rule out having a problem of this type," he added.

The specialist said that in Mexico up to 40 percent of men over 50 years of age can have this disease.

It should be noted that there are oral drugs for patients who have organic damage, however, when the condition is more severe drugs are placed inside the urinary tract or injections can be applied directly to the penis to produce an erection.
