Diabetes is incurable. However, there is much we can do to stay in control, reduce the risk of complications and even avoid them.

The complications of diabetes are many. Some of them represent an important cause of disability and others deteriorate the body to produce death.

Among the long-term complications are nerve damage, diabetic retinopathy, blindness, diabetic foot, amputations, kidney damage, chronic renal failure, difficulty controlling blood pressure and cholesterol level, erectile dysfunction, among others.

In addition to the complications, there are diseases that can coexist with diabetes. Some of them are tuberculosis, cancer, depression, dyslipidemias, diseases of the thyroid and heart, among others.

As if this were not enough, attention to diabetes represents a huge cost to the health system and to the expense of families.

Statistics published by the National Academy of Medicine of Mexico in 2015 estimated that the direct costs of diabetes exceeded 3 thousand 400 million dollars, and the indirect costs reached more than 4 thousand 300 million dollars.

What else do you need to take care of your health?

Take care of your diet, do not smoke, do physical activity and go to the doctor to check your glucose level.
