Mexico´s Minister of Health, Jose Narro Robles, was invited to give the Inaugural Conference of the XXII Regional Congress of the Mexican College of Specialists in Gynecology and Obstetrics, A.C. (COMEGO by its initials in Spanish)

Before an audience of gynecologist experts, Narro Robles spoke of pregnancy in girls and adolescents, an event that, he said, creates a "fracture" in the life line of women, since in many cases they must leave school, work, abandon or being abandoned by their family.

In Mexico, 1 in 5 births is recorded in mothers aged 19 years or less and in 2015, 10,277 births were reported in mothers aged 10 to 14 years, 2.5% of births.

To address this important social and health problem, the Mexico´s Federal Government launched in 2015 the National Strategy for the Prevention of Adolescent Pregnancy (ENAPEA by its initials in Spanish), which seeks to eradicate pregnancies in girls by 2030 and reduce teenage fertility rates by 50% from 15 to 19 years of age.

One of the actions of the Strategy is to create Friendly Services for Adolescents, in which guidance can be provided to prevent unplanned pregnancies, free contraceptives appropriate to the needs of each person and, in general, information on sexual and reproductive health.

Narro Robles highlighted that between 2012 and 2017 the Friendly Services have increased by 57%, reaching 1650 throughout the country.
