This morning, at 11:02 Mexico City time, President Enrique Peña Nieto received a call from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who had previously requested this communication.
On behalf of the Egyptian people and government, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi expressed his condolences and deep regret over the tragic incident in which eight Mexicans died and another six were injured.
During the conversation, President Enrique Peña Nieto expressed his deep dismay and sadness at the loss of life of his fellow countrymen, as well as the pain and indignation these unprecedented events have caused in Mexican society. He also expressed his concern over the injured and asked for them to be given the best possible medical care.
The Mexican President repeated the need to conduct a prompt, exhaustive investigation to establish responsibilities and determine exactly what happened in the incident in which the casualties were Mexican tourists.
President Peña Nieto also informed President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi that he has sent a diplomatic mission led by Foreign Claudia Ruiz Massieu on behalf of both the Mexican Government and himself. He explained that this mission has been tasked with providing all the necessary support to the injured and repatriating their fellow countrymen as soon as possible, as well as conversing with the Egyptian authorities and obtaining first-hand information on the progress of the investigation. The president asked his Egyptian counterpart to provide all the necessary facilities.
For his part, the Egyptian president reiterated his willingness to enable the Mexican mission to fulfill its mission, and said that he had instructed the injured to be properly cared for and, of course, for a detailed investigation to be conducted of the events that have filled both Mexico and Egypt with grief. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi stated that Mexico and Egypt have maintained a long friendship that is now unfortunately undergoing a period of pain and grief.
Lastly, President Enrique Peña Nieto thanked the Egyptian President for his personal involvement in dealing with these tragic events and also expressed his condolences for the Egyptians who died or were injured in the same incident.
