In compliance with the provisions of the Law of the
National System of Statistics and Geographic Information, President Peña Nieto has
appointed Julio Alfonso Santaella Castell as Chairman of the Board of Governors
of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography for the period from January
1 2016 to December 31 2021, due to the fact that Eduardo Sojo Garza Aldape
concludes his term of office tomorrow.
The appointment was made after the Senate approved the president’s appointment
of Julio Alfonso Castell Santaella as a member of the Board of Governors in this
autonomous constitutional body on December 15.
Julio Alfonso Santaella Castell holds a degree in economics from the
Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM) and a master’s and PhD in
economics from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the United States.
He served as Executive Coordinator of the Mexican Petroleum Fund for
Stabilization and Development. In the Bank of Mexico, he has held several
important positions since 2001 such as: Director of
Operations Support of the Central Bank and Information and Analysis Manager of
Central Bank Operations.
The new INEGI president has extensive experience in various financial
areas such as payment systems, external foreign debt and macroeconomic policies.
