• Originally we had talked about handing out 25,000 pesos a month for building homes beyond repair in November, December and January, he recalled.
  • This week, assistance will be delivered to rebuild 7,400 dwellings in the municipality that are beyond repair, and to repair 7,600 homes with partial damage.
  • In the state of Oaxaca, nearly half the 25,000 homes damaged beyond repair have been demolished, he said.
  • In this municipality he carried out a supervision visit of the delivery of support cards for the reconstruction of the homes affected by the earthquakes in September.

President Enrique Peña Nieto made a visit in this municipality to supervise the delivery of support cards for the reconstruction of homes affected by the earthquakes of last September, in which he announced that in November, the delivery of resources and an advance payment of 25 thousand pesos will be given to the families affected.

He explained that as a result, in November the families affected who received bank cards into which funds will be deposited for reconstruction in Oaxaca, Chiapas, and in other states that reported damage from the earthquake, will be able to have a total of 50,000 pesos for the purchase of building materials, to expedite the process of rebuilding their homes.

”If the conditions are right, the land has been cleared, and the houses that were affected have already been demolished, we will provide advance payments. Originally we had talked about handing out 25,000 pesos a month for building homes beyond repair in November, December and January,” he recalled.

This weekend the delivery of cards to deposit resources for housing reconstruction will be completed.

The president said that this municipality was the most severely affected of the 41 municipalities damaged in the Isthmus of Oaxaca. Nearly one out of every four houses affected by earthquakes in the state of Oaxaca is located in Juchitán.

He said that, “We have moved more slowly here, due to the difficulty of demolishing houses and removing the debris”. However, he added, “More equipment has been delivered to help with the demolition, and to do it as quickly as possible”.

He mentioned that in this municipality, the delivery of bank cards with resources for reconstruction had been delayed. We did not want to begin the delivery of cards until we had advanced the demolition of the houses that were affected and damaged,” he said.

“This week, assistance will be delivered to rebuild 7,400 dwellings in the municipality that are beyond repair, and to repair 7,600 partially damaged homes,” he declared.

The president declared that the economic support families are receiving, “Is calculated to allow them to have decent housing”.

“Those who had bigger homes which were affected will be eligible for a loan of up to 100 thousand pesos with a very soft rate of 7 percent,” he added.

“It has been calculated that 120,000 pesos in assistance will enable those whose homes were damaged beyond repair to build a house in optimal conditions, with two bedrooms, and a living room, dining room and bathroom,” he noted.

He said that in this municipality, just over 1,500 of the 7,400 houses that were damaged beyond repair have already been demolished. "We estimate that it will take us several weeks, perhaps the whole month of November, to completely demolish the 7,400 houses here in Juchitán," he said.

He indicated that in the rest of the state "we have been able to advance more quickly because they are very isolated houses, in remote places, in places where it has been easier to demolish." He added that, “We have demolished nearly 50 percent of the dwellings. We are talking about nearly 25,000 houses damaged beyond repair in the entire state of Oaxaca, nearly half of which have already been demolished”.

WE ARE ALSO WORKING TO REBUILD SCHOOLS

President Peña Nieto mentioned that work is also being done to rebuild schools. He recalled that over a thousand schools were affected in Oaxaca, which has meant that, “Today a large number of young people have not been able to return to school.”

He said that in order to prevent children and young people from missing a school year, the construction of new classrooms where schools that were either partially damaged or totally demolished will begin as soon as possible”.

But while this goal is achieved, he added, "We are also adapting temporary spaces for the children to return to classes as soon as possible”.

"We are expediting this process so that all the children in Oaxaca will be back at school in November. This is the government’s commitment and great challenge,” he said.

At the event, the president gave out cards with rebuilding funds for the families affected.
