Today, in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, President of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, and Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, signed the Trade Agreement between Mexico, the United States and Canada (USMCA).

Within the framework of the G20 Leaders Summit’, the leaders of the three countries welcomed the signing of the USMCA, and declared that this agreement strengthens the commercial integration of North America, maintaining it as one of the most competitive regions in the world.

President Enrique Peña Nieto said that the treaty represents the shared will of Mexico, the United States and Canada to work together for the well-being and prosperity of their societies, and welcomed having reached the culmination of a “lengthy process of dialogue and negotiation” that made it possible, “to overcome differences and reconcile points of view”. In particular, he noted that the negotiation of the USMCA confirmed the importance of the economic integration of North America.

The president declared that this the first trade agreement that incorporates elements to address the social impact of international trade, since it facilitates the participation of more sectors of the economy, extends the protection of workers’ rights, strengthens environmental protection and incorporates a review clause that will facilitate its constant updating.

President Peña Nieto thanked his peers for the vision with which they conducted themselves to forge this Agreement. He also thanked the negotiating teams of the three countries, the businessmen who accompanied the process, and in particular to the incoming Mexican government.

The signing of USMCA marks the end of the negotiation phase of the Treaty, giving way to the stage of legislative approval, in accordance with the respective internal processes in each of the countries. In the case of Mexico, the USMCA will be submitted to the Senate by the president for consideration and eventual ratification.
