• Mexico will continue diversifying its ties with Latin America.

The second meeting of the Council of the Uruguay-Mexico Strategic Partnership Agreement was held today, co-chaired by Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray and Uruguayan Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa.

Foreign Secretary Videgaray and Minister Nin Novoa held a bilateral meeting to discuss how to strengthen the excellent relationship, and what specific steps must be taken to do so.  They also exchanged views on Latin America and welcomed their areas of agreement on various regional issues.

During the 2nd meeting of the Council of the Strategic Partnership Agreement, the council's various commissions (political affairs, economic and trade affairs and investment, technical and scientific cooperation and educational and cultural cooperation) presented their reports.

The two countries agreed to hold the second meeting of the Committee on Cooperation against Drug Trafficking and Drug Dependence and to establish a bilateral mechanism for bilateral consular and migration consultations.

They also welcomed the signing in May by our economic officials of the Terms of Reference for updating and modernizing the Free Trade Agreement.

The two officials welcomed the results of the 4th meeting of the Commission for Technical and Scientific Cooperation that was held on June 2, during which the two governments ratified their dynamic and productive collaboration within the Joint Fund. Since 2011, the fund has financed 27 projects made up of 318 activities in which 222 experts have participated.

The Foreign Ministers discussed the progress made by the technical and scientific cooperation programs in priority sectors for both countries: environment and climate change, health, social development, science and technology, culture, governance and the strengthening of public policies.

Regarding education and culture, Mexico and Uruguay agreed to give renewed impetus to exchanges, and they agreed to hold the second meeting of the cooperation commission for these areas in Mexico City during the first quarter of 2018.

The Partnership Council is the main forum for political dialogue between the two countries and it ensures compliance with the Strategic Partnership Agreement signed on August 14, 2009 and in force since 2011. This is the first time the meeting has been held in Mexico.
