Representing Mexico, Undersecretary of Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights Martha Delgado was elected president of the first assembly of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) for the 2019-2023 term. The assembly is being held from May 27-31, 2019 at the UN in Nairobi, Kenya.

Mexico was elected president by acclamation, with the support of the Latin American and Caribbean Group (GRULAC). As president, Mexico will be able to position itself as an international leader on urban issues and contribute solid national experience and international best practices to finding the most innovative solutions for Mexico's urban challenges.

In the opening session, the undersecretary was accompanied by Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta; UN-Habitat Executive Director Maimunah Mohd Sharif; and UNEP Acting Executive Director Joyce Msuya. Over 4,000 people are attending the assembly, which includes the 193 UN member countries. It will meet every four years to make decisions and pass resolutions that will frame the global urbanization agenda, and to look at major trends, norms and standards related to human settlements.

The theme of the first assembly is "Innovation for Better Quality of Life in Cities and Communities." The goal is to respond to the challenges of urbanization: urban poverty, marginalization, unemployment, climate change and humanitarian crises, among other issues. It also seeks innovative solutions and best practices for sustainable urban development without leaving anyone or any place behind.

To accelerate the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the UN-Habitat assembly offers opportunities to form strategic partnerships to advance the agenda of sustainable urbanization and human settlements. The Assembly is also expected to mobilize strong political and financial support for the UN-Habitat Strategic Plan, confirming its role as a center of excellence and a global leader in the issue.

The assembly's ministerial declaration, resolutions and administrative decisions should all be adopted on Friday, May 31.
