On behalf of President Enrique Peña Nieto, Foreign Secretary Claudia Ruiz Massieu attended the inauguration of the new president of Argentina, Mauricio Macri, to whom she conveyed the greetings and congratulations of the Mexican president and reiterated the importance to Mexico of the bilateral relationship.

In Buenos Aires, the Foreign Secretary greeted Susana Malcorra, congratulating her on her appointment as Foreign Minister. She also met with Asa Regnér, Swedish Minister for Children, the Elderly and Gender Equality.

The start of President Macri’s administration will coincide with the start of negotiations on diversifying trade and investment between Mexico and Argentina. And the Fondo de Cultura Económica will open a library and cultural center in the second half of 2016 that will provide another forum for encounters and exchanges of literature and the sciences in Latin America.

The bilateral relationship between Mexico and Argentina is guided by the Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA) signed in 2007 and in force since July 2008. Argentina is Mexico’s sixth largest trading partner in Latin America and the Caribbean, and Mexico is the seventh largest investor from the region in Argentina, with a cumulative total of USD 4.775 billion in 2014.
