Foreign Secretary Claudia Ruiz Massieu spoke today at the Harvard National Model United Nations Latin America (HNMUNLA), saying that Mexico is promoting the modernization of the UN Security Council so that it can adapt to the new global reality.

"We continue to have a Security Council that does not reflect the new balance of forces or the new reality of the 21st century, a Security Council that does not evolve with the international system. The vast majority of UN member States are interested in reforming the Security Council, but we still haven’t been able to build a big enough consensus to reach a result that is acceptable to all.”

The Foreign Secretary said that "Mexico is seeking reform for the Council because if that is not achieved we are convinced that we all lose. If we fail, we risk having both the Security Council and the UN itself become irrelevant, and that security arrangements are made outside of the UN or, worse, that the Council’s decisions are ignored by the States."

During the student meeting, held at the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM), the Foreign Secretary said that Mexico is committed to the law, justice, human rights and women’s and migrants’ rights. Therefore, it will continue to cooperate with the UN to promote the observance of human rights.

She emphasized that, given an uncertain global outlook, the United Nations is the universal forum that brings together all political and social actors to face together humanity’s greatest challenges.

"If the member States can not agree, then the UN will indeed lose its reason for being. Therefore, we are obligated to make sure that it continues, that it is modernized and updated and that it continues to be an organization that collectively—and with respect for human rights—addresses humanity’s great challenges,” she concluded.

The event was attended by ITAM President Arturo Fernández Pérez; Senator Gabriela Cuevas Barrón, President of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee; Rafael Fernández de Castro, Director of the ITAM International Relations Undergraduate Program; René Solís Brown, President of the Mexico Foundation at Harvard; Taji Hutchins, HNMUNLA Secretary General; Natalia Saltalamacchia, Director General of the Matías Romero Institute; and Olga Pellicer, Professor, ITAM, among other guests.
