Every March 8, women from different countries, ages, cultures and conditions come together to commemorate International Women's Day. The UN says "International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men."
Since the United Nations Charter—the first international agreement to proclaim gender equality as a fundamental human right—was signed, the UN has helped create internationally-agreed strategies, standards, programs and goals to advance the status of women worldwide. In 2010, it created UN Women, an entity that works specifically to achieve gender equality and to empower women around the world.
The 2016 theme is "Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality." Countries are urged to reflect on how to accelerate the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the effective implementation of the new Sustainable Development Goals, whose fifth goal is "gender equality."
