With the reform of Article 82 of the Regulations of the Law of the Mexican Foreign Service, consular offices may now issue civil registry documents to all Mexicans living outside the country if they were not registered in Mexico in a timely manner.

Here's a list of the most important benefits of this measure:

  • Individuals abroad retain their right to identity even without their birth certificates (under the terms of Article 4 of the Mexican Constitution).
  • By being able to obtain documents that are recognized abroad, individuals will be able to request a passport or consular ID in order, for example, to regularize their immigration status.
  • It will no longer be necessary to travel to Mexico for registration procedures.

The Foreign Ministry will issue guidelines to ensure the registration of Mexicans at the consular offices.
