The 12th meeting of the Spain-Mexico Binational Commission was held today, April 20, 2107, in Madrid, co-chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain, Alfonso Dastis, and Mexican Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray.

There were previous meetings of the five subcommittees that comprise the Binational Commission: Political Affairs; Economic-Financial Affairs; Legal-Consular and Interior Affairs; and Cooperation, as set forth in its chapters on Scientific-Technical and Educational-Cultural Cooperation, Legal - Consular Affairs and Interior and Defense.

This is the 12th meeting of the Binational Commission—our institutional frame of reference since its creation in October 1977. It is especially important this year: in 2017 we not only celebrate the 40th anniversary of its creation, but also the 40th anniversary of the renewed diplomatic relationship between our two countries. For this reason, Mexico and Spain have given special emphasis to these two days of meetings. And for the same reason, the Mexican Secretaries of Culture and Labor, María Cristina Cepeda and Alfonso Navarrete, are present.

The 12th meeting of the Binational Commission has shown us that today, on this 40th anniversary, our diplomatic relationship is stronger than ever, thanks to the work done over the last decades.

During this meeting of the Binational Commission, in addition to the Final Act of the 12th Spain-Mexico Binational Commission, six new legal texts were signed:

  • An Air Transport Agreement between Mexico and Spain
  • A Collaboration Agreement between ICEX Spain Trade and Investment and ProMexico
  • A Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between Diplomatic Academies between the Mexican Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain
  • A Memorandum of Understanding between the Mexican Attorney General’s Office for Consumer Protection and the Spanish Agency for Consumer Affairs, Food Safety and Nutrition
  • A Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Mexican and Spanish Labor Ministries
  • A Joint Declaration on the Cession of Casa Buñuel

During the meetings, we have confirmed once again that the Binational Commission is an excellent vehicle for the governments of both countries to build on the ties of mutual appreciation and reciprocal interest that bind our citizens, and to work continually to improve, expand and deepen the already strategic relationship.
