As he inaugurated the 12th Motorized Cavalry Regiment and its Military Housing Unit, President Enrique Peña Nieto said that, “In addition to providing a key social service, the Armed Forces are a valuable asset for achieving Mexico in Peace,” adding that thanks to coordination between the authorities, the use of information systems and strategic planning, “We have made significant progress in security”.

He said that, “Strategic blows have been struck to weaken the structure of the criminal organizations that do most harm to Mexicans: to date, 100 of the 122 key objectives, the most dangerous wanted criminals, have been neutralized”.

He added that another important aspect is that nationwide, there have been significant reductions in the number of intentional homicides and kidnappings, and extortion.

While these results are encouraging, it is necessary to consolidate them. “The message is clear: the Mexican government will not take a single step back in this key objective of providing security and tranquility for Mexican families”.

The president said that Coahuila has also seen a significant reduction in crime.

“In full coordination with the state authorities, in the first five months of 2016, intentional homicides and burglaries  fell by 60 percent, while highway robberies have decreased by 92 percent, compared with the same period in 2012,” he said.

He declared that, “Although we still have major challenges to overcome in certain specific areas of our country, Mexico has the institutional support of its armed forces”.

He explained that precisely to ensure that the Mexican Army has a greater capacity for territorial deployment, in this administration, nine barracks have been build in various states in the country. Here In Coahuila, he explained,  “Two barracks have already been inaugurated during this administration: that of the 105th Infantry Battalion, in the municipality of Frontera and the Twelfth Motorized Cavalry Regiment facilities, inaugurated today”.

The president hoped that the activities of the military personnel attached to these units, “Will translate into greater protection for Coahuila’s families and help strengthen order and security in this border area”.

President Peña Nieto recalled the events of March 10 in the Zócalo in Mexico City, when military personnel were hoisting the monumental flag.  The wind began to blow with great force, which hampered their work.

“A group of civilians spontaneously and determinedly gathered round to help the soldiers. In an instant, dozens of Mexicans, including children, stood together, shoulder to shoulder, to join forces”, he said.

He said that in addition to being exciting, “This symbolic image of solidarity and respect for our national flag reminds us that the country belongs to everyone, and we all have a responsibility to fulfill our duty to it”.

“Thus, by joining forces, with everyone doing their share, we will continue working for Coahuila, Mexico and all Mexicans,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the president visited the Military Exhibition, “Armed Forces: Passion to serve Mexico”. At the end of the event, President Peña Nieto also toured the 12th Motorized Cavalry Regiment facilities and its Military Housing Unit, and had lunch with members of the regiment.

Governor of Coahuila Rubén Moreira Valdez said that the reduction of crime in the state was due to President Peña Nieto. He said that achieving this required,  “The will of local and federal governments to combat crime; but also the will to coordinate ourselves and perform the task as a single body”.

He told the president he has brought peace to Coahuila. “More than seven thousand joint actions show that the policy ordered by you and implemented by your secretaries has succeeded. In your government, I have found openness, dialogue, support, coordination, collaboration, but above all, Mr. President, I have found good faith”.

He said that the decline in homicides began when the current federal administration started. “The numbers speak for themselves. We defeated the forces of evil in the past and we will defeat them in the future,” he said, after announcing  that, “According to the INEGI, Coahuila went from being one of the most violent states to the state with the fewest crime victims”.

THE SUM OF WILLS BETWEEN THE THREE LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT, SOCIETY AND THE ARMED FORCES IS THE WAY TO OVERCOME MAJOR CHALLENGES: MILITARY COMMANDER OF THE XI MILITARY REGION,  URIBE TOLEDO

Gen. Uribe Toledo Sibaja, Commander of the XI Military Region said that the 12th Regiment’s new facilties constitute another step to fulfill President Peña Nieto’s instructions, “To achieve a Mexico at peace.”

The new facilities, he said, extend the presence and operational and logistical capacities of the army in the parts of the country where they are most needed, reducing the response times to any contingency. “Rest assured that the troops that are here today will fulfill their missions with absolute dedication and professionalism, and great respect for citizens’ fundamental rights,” he said.

He declared that joint work and the sum of wills between the three levels of government, society and the armed forces, is the route,  "To overcome the great challenges faced. He said that joint work, “Is already yielding tangible results in other parts of the country, reducing the crimes that cause the greatest harm to society, such as murder, extortion, robbery with violence and kidnapping”.

Gen. Uribe Toledo added that the various missions the 12th Regiment will undertake will also benefit the municipalities of Allende, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jimenez, Juarez, Nava and Villa Unión, where it will maintain a presence.
