In the presidential hangar, President Enrique Peña Nieto, accompanied by his wife Angélica Rivera de Peña, received His Holiness Pope Francis at the start of his visit to Mexico.

At the reception ceremony, Pope Francis and President Peña Nieto greeted the respective official delegations.

The Mexican State and the Holy See have a close, respectful relationship and share values such as social justice, peace and security.

During the reception, a group of four children, dressed in the typical costumes of the states of Jalisco, Oaxaca, Puebla and Veracruz, approached His Holiness with a chest of Mexican soil, which he blessed.

A mariachi band played music, and a ballet company performed traditional Mexican dances. Mexican artists sang the song “Light”.

At the Presidential Hangar, His Holiness also greeted the Papal Entourage, the Permanent Council and the Presidential Council of the Mexican Episcopate.

Afterwards, the president and his wife held a private meeting with Pope Francis.
