· With strong commitment and a profound sense of duty, the Presidential General Staff took the necessary steps to provide protection and care for His Holiness, he declared.

· "Today you will continue to ensure the security of the president and his family, and in doing guard the stability and strength of the Mexican state,” he said.

· He also congratulated members of the Presidential General Staff that formed the Pope’s guard in Mexico, and are part of the Mexican president’s personal guard.

· The president led the commemoration of the Presidential General Staff.

Earlier today, President  Enrique Peña Nieto expressed his gratitude for the outstanding work and professionalism of the Presidential General Staff (EMP) during Pope Francis’ recent visit to Mexico.

As he led the commemoration of Presidential General Staff Day, an institution directed by General Roberto Miranda Moreno, the president said that, “During each of his 50 activities and  land tours covering 319 kilometers, the Presidential General Staff guaranteed the Pope’s physical integrity and the safety of more than 10 million Mexicans who came to see him in person.”

“With strong commitment and a profound sense of duty, the Presidential General Staff took the necessary steps to provide protection and care for His Holiness,” he declared.

President Peña Nieto personally congratulated General Gumaro Cabrera Osornio, Deputy Chief of Logistics of the Presidential General Staff, who was responsible for the security operations during Pope Francis’ visit to Mexico.  He also congratulated members of the Presidential General Staff that formed the Pope’s guard in Mexico, and are part of the Mexican president’s personal security detail.

At the ceremony, the president noted that during the papal visit to Mexico, “The Presidential General Staff coordinated a broad-ranging institutional operation to ensure that the many expressions of joy were conducted in a smooth, organized fashion.” In this delicate task of protecting our distinguished guest, His Holiness, “Each of you showed responsibility, experience and professionalism,” he told members of the Presidential General Staff.

The  president also recognized and thanked, “The Mexican Army and Navy, the Federal Police and the Center for Investigation and National Security (CISEN) and the various Health and Civil Protection agencies, for their coordination and professionalism during Pope Francis’ visit.”

He also thanked the over 200,000 volunteers, especially the Mexican Red Cross, who took part in this great collective effort.

He noted that this visit, widely followed by the media and society, “Has provided Mexicans with a better understanding of the functions and logistic capacities of the Presidential General Staff.”

President Peña Nieto said: “It is an honor to celebrate the women and men who permanently fulfill their lofty mission, under the unshakeable principles of courage and discretion, honor and institutionality.”

He said that, “Loyalty, honesty and professionalism are hallmarks of the Presidential General Staff,  an institution dedicated to safeguarding the integrity and investiture of the president.”

“With the same courage and dedication shown by Captains Garmendia and Montes on February 18, 1913, you continue to protect the security of the president and his family, and in doing so, safeguard the stability and strength of the Mexican state,” he told them .

He said that, “In 21st century Mexico, the Presidential General Staff continues to consolidate itself as a highly skilled, professional institution, which remains at the forefront in logistics, military technology and security.”

“You,  members of the Presidential General Staff, as part of the Armed Forces of Mexico, have made loyalty a mystique of service that guides your actions on a permanent basis,” the president told members of this armed body.

During the event, held at the official residence of Los Pinos, President Peña Nieto presented awards to the winners of the  “Fourth Captains Gustavo Garmendia Villafaña and Federico Montes Alanis Shooting Tournament.”

Prior to the ceremony, he visited an exhibition of historic Presidential General Staff uniforms.

THE DISTINCTION OF SERVING THE PRESIDENT INVOLVES THE PRIVILEGE OF SERVING MEXICO: GENERAL ROBERTO MIRANDA

One hundred and three years after the heroic act by  Captains Garmendia and Montes, General Roberto Francisco Miranda Moreno, head of the Presidential General Staff, said that, “These  military men have shown us that protecting the president means defending democracy and safeguarding the rule of law. It means effective loyalty through deeds and  doing the right thing in the fulfillment of our duty.”

“They taught us through their example,” he said, “That the honor of belonging to the Presidential General Staff demands unconditional loyalty and numerous sacrifices, which we have assumed: we know that the distinction of serving the president implies the privilege of serving Mexico.”

He stated that, “As in the past, members of the Presidential General Staff accept the challenge of never betraying the trust of the people of Mexico and their president. For all these reasons, we are convinced that there is no higher duty for the Presidential General Staff than to accompany the president in his commitment to transforming Mexico. “

He said that the Presidential General Staff, “Is a century-old military body which, with daily work and effort, is being consolidated to ensure the president’s safety  and thus protect a fundamental institution for the country's democratic life.”

General Miranda said that during the visit by His Holiness Pope Francis,  the Presidential General Staff once again demonstrated its professionalism and commitment in the eyes of the international community, the people of Mexico, and the president. “At the end of this visit, I can say with great satisfaction: Mission accomplished, Mr. President.”

He said that, “As Chief of the Presidential Staff, I am convinced you have a statesman’s vision. Therefore, our only option is total commitment to the person who holds the country’s destiny in his hands.”

“In this great undertaking, there is no room for doubt; the Presidential General Staff will continue to loyally fulfill its mission to provide security and logistical support,” he said.
