Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto said today that, “We express our commitment to continuing to accompany Cuba and its people, as friends, as we have always done, in its historic march towards a more inclusive and prosperous society”.

“We recognize the steps it has taken towards becoming a more economically and politically open country,” he said.

During the ceremony to mark Fidel Castro’s death, the  “Mexico confirms its unconditional friendship with the Cuban people”:

After expressing his condolences to President Raúl Castro, the Mexican president recalled that in 2014, during the CELAC  Summit in Cuba, he had the opportunity of meeting Fidel Castro at a, "very emotional meeting, in which he confirmed his affection for Mexico and Mexicans.”

He also recalled that, “On that occasion, he also paid an official visit to Cuba, in an attempt to write a new page in the history of the friendship between our countries."

"Since then, Cuba and Mexico have been building a large, modern agenda, which was consolidated through President Raúl Castro’s state visit to Mexico in November, and which we will continue on the basis of our strong bonds of friendship”:

He said that, “Cuba and Mexico are friends and neighbors. Our countries are linked by deep and undeniable ties: the waters of the Caribbean Sea have linked our history for centuries”:

“The language and culture we share always remind us that Cuban and Mexican hearts beat in reflected solidarity and friendship. We have the same Latin American vocation; the ideal of a united America and of a historical ideal of both peoples: Our América, as José Martí put it,” he said.
