During the event at which awards and honorable mentions were presented to National Defense and Navy personnel, President Enrique Peña Nieto said that, “March 21 is a memorable date for Mexicans because on this day, we remember the birthday of one of the greatest heroes of the Republic: President Benito Juárez, a symbol of the law and national dignity.”

On the Damián Carmona esplanade of Military Field No. 1-A, he declared that through his life and his work, “President Juárez taught us a great lesson: that the law and the rule of law are essential to the progress of a society.” Juárez’s legacy, he declared, “continues to this day. The government is therefore working with determination and commitment to ensure legality and the rule of law throughout the country.”

In the presence of more than two thousand members of the Armed Forces, the president said that Juárez, "Together with a generation of prominent liberals, strengthened the republican regime. By fostering the secular state, he supported the freedoms and rights of Mexicans, and stoutly defended the nation from a foreign invasion.”

“In the law,” he said, “Benito Juárez found an ideal instrument to protect the highest human values such as justice, freedom and equality.”
