- He congratulated the Mexican soldiers and sailors who offer the international community their experience in humanitarian assistance.
Through a blog published by the President’s Office, Mexico paid tribute to the thousands of men and women who work in UN Peacekeeping Operations (UNPO) to achieve a safer, more prosperous and peaceful world.
According to the blog, a country’s participation in UN Peacekeeping Operations is one of the expressions of the global responsibility of a state. For that reason, and in keeping with the decision announced by President Enrique Peña Nieto at the United Nations General Assembly on September 24, 2014, Mexico was reincorporated into the UNPO in April 2015.
It notes that Mexico had been part of the UNPO on three previous occasions: the first two with Military Observers in the Balkans (1947-1950) and Kashmir (on the border between India and Pakistan in 1949), and subsequently in El Salvador (1992-1993) with 120 policemen.
It adds that members of the National Defense Secretariat and the Navy Secretariat, including Staff Officers and Military Observers, participate in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), the United Nations Missions for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
It also notes that Mexican Armed Forces personnel have been trained by the UN with certified courses, with the valuable support of friendly countries such as Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Ecuador, Spain, the United States, Finland, Guatemala, India, Norway, United Kingdom, Sweden, Switzerland and Uruguay.
The blog mentions that the skills and training of Mexican personnel meet the highest standards, enabling them to provide a high-profile performance by contributing to international peace and security through the humanitarian assistance they provide, in keeping with the normative principles of foreign policy established in the Constitution.
It also notes that Mexico is the second largest Latin American financial contributor to the budget for these operations.
Lastly, the blog states that Mexico reiterates its commitment to the defense of the great causes of humanity, such as international peacekeeping, in accordance with the principles and values of the United Nations Organization.
