President Enrique Peña Nieto presented the National Science, Arts and Literature Awards

He said that progress is linked to education, which is why, in 2017, through the Public Education Secretariat, the government will continue working on the design of a new educational model befitting the challenges of the 21st century.

The prize winners received the awards because of:

“Their contributions, which range from research on liver disease, through the study of nanoparticles to the properties of scorpion venom and the development of artificial intelligence” and their work “In the areas of music composition, creative writing and research on film history and folk art”: EPN

Prizes were awarded to the following people:

The National Science Prize was awarded to David Kershenobich Stalnikowitz and Ana Cecilia Noguez Garrido in the field of Physics and Mathematics and Natural Sciences and Lourival Domingos Possani Postay and Luis Enrique Sucar Succar in Technology, Innovation and Design.

The National Prize for Art and Literature was presented to Aurelio de los Reyes Garcia Rojas in the field of History, Social Sciences and Philosophy; Elsa Maria Cross y Anzaldua in Linguistics and Literature; Gabriela Ortiz Torres in Fine Arts and Manuela Cecilia Lino Bello in Popular Traditions.

Supports for Science, Arts and Literature

  • The government has made an unprecedented effort to support science: in four years, accumulated spending on research and experimental development has amounted to over 370 billion pesos, 24 percent more than during the same period in the previous administration.
  • In 2017, an additional 100 billion pesos will be allocated.
  • From 2013 to August 2016 nearly 13,000 direct grants were provided for creation, through the various cultural and artistic promotion programs, as well as 620 scholarships for young creators.
