Tradition has it that November 1 and 2 is the time when the souls of dead relatives return home to live with living relatives and draw nourishment from the food offered to them in the altars or offerings.

The Day of the Dead is celebrated throughout Mexico. According to popular belief, November 1 is devoted to the “little dead” who perished as children and November 2 to those who died as adults.

The offering or “altar to the dead” presented during this period comprises the typical pan de muerto, pumpkin cooked in syrup and the favorite foods of the dead person.

The altars are decorated with flowers, tissue paper decorations, yellow candles, sugar skulls and incense burners in which copal, a tropical tree resin, is burnt.
