President Enrique Peña Nieto welcomed Yair Israel Piña López, a physics student  at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) Science Faculty.

Yair was selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to join the Mars Desert Research Station Crew.

The LATAM-1 Mission, the first Latin American crew, will be held from April 29 to May 14 2017 in Utah, United States.

The Mission will simulate a stay in the Mars desert and recreate the conditions of the so-called red planet.

Who is Yair Israel Piña López?

At 20, he is the youngest Mexican researcher to work for NASA.

He published an article in theJournal of Physics on radiation in space, in which he described its behavior and its potential effect on astronauts’ health.

“He is an example of the fact that the new generations are better prepared for the future and can compete internationally on a par with the best in the world,” EPN                 

The Mexican president congratulated Yair on his achievement and on honoring Mexico’s name. He wished him success in his mission and urged him to continue his efforts.
